Apprenticeship Training
WHAT IS A BRICKLAYER APPRENTICE?
A bricklayer apprentice is a person who prepares to become a skilled craftsman through pre-apprentice training, supervised work on the job, plus related classroom instruction. The apprentice, when working on the job, is a regular part of the work force who earns wages while acquiring an important skill.
The apprenticeship training period of a bricklayer apprentice is 6,000 hours of on the job training. Apprentices are taught the proper use, care and safe handling of the tools and equipment used in the trade. Classroom work is required in subjects related to the trade to round out their training.
At least one hundred and forty-four hours of related instruction are required each year. Classes are taught by a competent instructor with many years practical of experience in the trade.
AN APPRENTICE EARNS WHILE THEY LEARN.
After graduation of pre-apprentice training apprentices are paid 50% percentage of a journeyman’s wage to start. As they climb the ladder to journeyman status, the wages are increased at 10% intervals. At the end of their term of apprenticeship they become a journeyman and draw full pay for their skill.
The apprentice, at no cost to them, learns skills and acquires experience they can use the rest of their life. Training gained through apprenticeship has enabled many journeymen to advance to higher paying jobs.
APPRENTICES OF TODAY ARE THE FOREMAN, SUPERINTENDENTS AND CONTRACTORS OF TOMORROW.
The new apprentice moves through a planned learning program where the mastery of new skills goes hand and hand with bigger pay checks. Individual motivation, more than anything else, will determine how far a person advances to such positions as journeyman, foreman, contractor, or union officer to name
a few.
WHAT IS PRE- JOB TRAINING?
The pre- job training program is eight weeks, thirty two hours a week of intensive training, using the tools of the trade on mock-up of various wall systems found in the industry. The Training Center is located in Harrisville, West Virginia. There is no charge for this training. You will receive a small gas stipend for each day you attend class. For those that live too far away to commute each day, housing through the week will be provided
